Skin Care Dos and Don’ts

Has your skin been looking a little worse for wear lately? Then maybe you haven’t been taking proper care of it. The skin on your face is much more delicate than anywhere else on your body, so it’s important that you take extra precautions to keep it looking its best. Having beautiful, soft, clear skin is easy; just follow my tips and suggestions.

Tip #1: Quit smoking! Smoking is the second biggest cause of skin damage next to sun exposure. Smoking reduces the elasticity of your skin causing premature wrinkles. Nicotine constricts your blood vessels and decreases the flow of oxygen to your skin, resulting in dry, wrinkled skin.

Tip #2: Always, always wear sunscreen. Even if it a cloudy winter day, you should always be wearing at least SPF 15. Sun damage can occur even when the sun isn’t visible. The easiest way to incorporate sunscreen into your skincare routine is to purchase a moisturizer that already contains it.

Tip #3: Make sure to exfoliate. It’s best if you do this every day, but once a week will suffice. Choose an exfoliant that is made for your skin type. Chemical exfoliators that contain salicylic acid are best for combination skin. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to stick with microdermabrasives.

Tip #4: Always wash off your make-up. It can be a pain to wash your face every night before bed, but it is essential for beautiful clear skin. If you were foundation everyday, nighttime is the only time your skin gets a chance to breath easy. If you often forget or neglect to wash your face, this will likely result in clogged pores and blemishes.

Tip #5: Sleep on your back. Sleeping with your face pressed up on a pillow in your futon bunk bed every night can lead to clogged pores, especially if you do not wash your sheets at least once a week. Pressing up again a pillow restricts the flow of oxygen to your face and may result in breakouts.
